President Donald J. Trump concludes his time at the 72nd United Nations General Assembly today. The President has had a successful first visit to the U.N. where he has led the United States' delegation and encouraged world leaders to band together to face the many serious challenges facing the world. ------------- Directing Federal Resources to Help Hurricane Victims The President is continuing to direct federal resources to those that are affected by Hurricane Maria and to support recovery and relief efforts in areas affected by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. President Trump spoke with FEMA Director Brock Long yesterday and has approved disaster declarations for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. First Lady Melania Trump Hosts a Luncheon at the U.N. Yesterday, First Lady Melania Trump spoke at a luncheon for spouses of world leaders, held at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. Her remarks focused on the vulnerability of children, bullying, and social media. "The future of every nation rests with the promise of their young people," she stated, urging those present to "ensure they are prepared to accept the torch of leadership for the world of tomorrow." Working Luncheon With African Leaders President Trump met with African leaders at a working luncheon on United States-Africa relations. Presidents and officials of numerous African countries (Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa, and Uganda) attended the meeting. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Chief of Staff John Kelly, Ambassador Nikki Haley, and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster were also present. The President commended Africa's collective strides in business potential, healthcare (including the battles against HIV/AIDS and Ebola), and fast-growing economies saying, "Africa is a continent of tremendous, tremendous potential, the outlook is bright." President Trump and Vice President Pence will participate in three bilateral meetings with the President of Afghanistan, the President of Ukraine, and the President of the Republic of Korea. This afternoon, the President and Vice President will hold a trilateral meeting with the Republic of Korea and Japan, and will end the session with bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister of Japan and then the President of Turkey. |
