Iran's hard-liners have rallied to mark the defeat of the last major protest movement in 2009, as fresh anti-government protests threaten more unrest. Riot police have surrounded a student rally at Tehran University.
Russia: Court upholds ban on Alexei Navalny presidency bid
Russia's highest court has upheld a decision barring opposition leader Alexei Navalny from taking part in next year's presidential election. President Vladimir Putin is set to easily win a fourth term in the March vote.
St. Petersburg supermarket bombing: Russian security arrests suspect
Russian security services have announced the arrest of a suspect in the bombing of a St. Petersburg supermarket, in which 14 people were injured. The arrest came after the "Islamic State" claimed responsibility.
Mount Everest: Nepal bans solo mountain climbs
New safety measures in Nepal will ban solo climbers and people with some disabilities from scaling the country's mountains. More than 290 people have died attempting to scale Everest, the world's highest mountain.
EU asylum applications drop off drastically in 2017
The number of people applying for asylum in the European Union in 2017 dropped significantly for the first time since 2015. Germany still received the highest number of applications, but less than half were approved.
Egypt: Court sentences former President Mohammed Morsi for 'insulting judiciary'
An Egyptian court has fined former President Mohammed Morsi and sentenced him to three years in prison. Separately, human rights lawyer and activist Mahinour el-Masry was given a two-year prison sentence.
Egypt: Police kill 3 militants in shootout after church attack
The three militant deaths come after a gunman shot dead nine people, including six Coptic Christians and a policeman. Police said the suspected attacker, Ibrahim Ismail, had been involved in previous deadly attacks.
Russia's bitcoin expert Pavel Lerner freed after kidnapping
The Russian head of a UK-registered cryptocurrency exchange has been freed after unknown assailants kidnapped him in Ukraine. The kidnappers released Pavel Lerner in exchange for a million-dollar ransom.

Kamil Stoch wins first leg of Four Hills tournament
Poland's Kamil Stoch, last season's winner, has claimed victory in the first stage of the annual ski jumping tournament. Germany's Richard Freitag has finished in second place. Competition resumes on Sunday.
