European Parliament Alerts from the Human Rights committee

Highlights - Genocide crimes do not only belong in the past, they are still happening now - Subcommittee on Human Rights

On 8 December, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Mr Pier Antonio Panzeri, commemorated and honoured the victims of the crime of genocide and urged that the international community act.

"In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution, initiated by Armenia, establishing 9 December as the International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime. 9 December is the anniversary of the adoption of the 1948 Genocide Convention. The purpose of this International Day is to draw attention to the role of the Genocide Convention in combating and preventing genocide and to commemorate and honour its victims."

On 7 December, MEPs from the EP's Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) and the EP Delegation to EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee held a discussion on the state of play in the area of the rule of law and fundamental freedoms in Turkey.

The increasing harassments of human rights defenders, academics, civil servants, journalists, and artists culminated with the recent detention of Mr Osman Kavala, one of the most prominent and respected figures in Turkey's arts and culture scene...a bridge-builder, a man of dialogue and reconciliation," said Pier Antonio PANZERI, the Chair of the Subcommittee.

In reaction to the on-going judicial review concerning the sentence of Dr. Mohammad Ali Taheri, the Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, Pier Antonio Panzeri, stated:

"I am gravely concerned about the on-going judicial review by Iran's Revolutionary Court concerning the sentence of Dr. Mohammad Ali Taheri, the founder of the Erfan-e Halghe movement (also known as Inter-Universalism)..."
