09-01-2018 04:52 PM CET The unusually large influx of migrants arriving in or attempting to reach the EU in the last years prompted a series of responses by the European Union, framed by the European Commission in the European Agenda on Migration in May 2015. Based on "four pillars to manage migration better", the Agenda included proposals in four areas of action - fighting irregular migration, reinforcing common border management, strengthening the common asylum policy and launching a new policy on legal migration. In its resolution of 12 April 2016 on "The Situation in the Mediterranean and the need for a holistic EU policy on migration" which serves as a compass for all its legislative work on migration and asylum, the European Parliament also took a comprehensive stance - in its reaction to "the crisis", the EU should not forget long term perspectives, notably in view of its aging demographic evolution and competing economic activity. With this one-day event, Parliamentarians at both national and European level will have a unique opportunity to exchange with representatives of EU institutions, bodies and agencies, intergovernmental organisations, local governments, academics and think tanks on a topic which combines competences at all levels of governance in the EU.
