Mars brighter in 2018 than since 2003

In 2003, Mars was closer and brighter in our sky than in nearly 60,000 years. In 2018, Mars will again be exceedingly close, bright and fabulous in our sky. Start watching Mars now!

Tonight … See a faint star cluster near bright Sirius

Sirius is easy to find. It's the sky's brightest star. If you have binoculars and a dark location, look near it for the star cluster M41.

New year's comets

Will 2018 give us a bright comet? There are a couple of possibilities. In the meantime, here are some photos of comets, visible through telescopes, as 2018 begins.

Miss Jupiter and Mars? Photos here

On Sunday morning, Jupiter and Mars were half a moon-diameter apart. Photos here from the EarthSky community around the world.
