Highlights - Public Hearing: Protecting the rights of victims of terrorism in the EU - Special Committee on Terrorism

TERR Public Hearing
On 21 March 2018, the TERR Committee will dedicate its first public hearing - a whole day event- to the protection of the rights of victims of terrorism in the EU.

On the eve of commemoration of the attacks at Brussels National Airport and Maelbeek metro station on 22 March 2016, and the attack on Westminster Bridge in London on 22 March 2017, the hearing will pay tribute to the victims of terrorism while tackling the issues still at stake to ensure that their rights are appropriately guaranteed within the European Union.

Members will listen to the experiences and recommendations of victims, high-level practitioners, representatives of the civil society and of national authorities of Member States. The issues addressed will include cross-border situations, access to justice and adequate financial and psychological support, awareness raising, and appropriate coordination at EU level.

TERR Public Hearing
The public hearing of 22 March 2018 will be dedicated to the topic of "Resilience".

TERR Members will hold an exchange of views with Mr Nicolas Hénin, a French journalist and writer, former ISIS hostage in Syria, and the President of the NGO "Action Resilience".

This debate will be followed by a presentation on "Experience and Resilience: lessons learned - a Spanish perspective" held by Mr Fernando Reinares, a Professor of Political Sciences & Security Studies at the Juan Carlos University in Madrid and a specialist in terrorism.

The speakers will examine how to develop and foster civil society resilience against radicalisation and terrorism, while at the same time safeguarding public liberties and fundamental rights.
