London's Metropolitan Police on Friday confirmed the cause of the blaze on June 14 and said that insulation and exterior tiles failed fire safety tests. The disaster is the deadliest fire in mainland Britain since the start of the 20th century.

Kia ora SOFIA – Airborne observatory welcomed in New Zealand - The joint DLR/NASA observatory will use three instruments to investigate the southern skies

Kia ora is how the Maori, New Zealand's indigenous people, traditionally welcome their guests – even when said guest is a flying observatory. At 01:05 Central European Summer Time (11:05 local time) on 23 June 2017, SOFIA was greeted with Kia ora when it touched 'down under' at Christchurch Airport. The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) – a joint project of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – will conduct 25 observation flights over several weeks until 10 August 2017 to take a close look at the southern skies. The first scientific flight of this year's campaign – its fourth in New Zealand – will take place on 26 June.

BREAKING: Exclusive: Senate committee investigating prison after empty guard towers allowed carjacker to escape

In a maximum security federal prison in California, convicted carjacker Guaymar Cabrera Hernandez made a run for it. A key to his brazen escape last month: Five guard towers ringing the perimeter of the compound were not staffed. Turns out, they have been empty for nearly six years. The breach has now drawn the scrutiny of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, which is exploring the increased reliance on fencing technology at the nation's most secure prison facilities - in lieu of tower officers who once represented the last line of defense against escape and other disturbances.

Quarterly mortality report, England: Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) 2017

Provisionally, 131,592 deaths occurred between 1 January and 31 March 2017 in England.

The estimate is based on best available data, but following late registrations the estimate is likely to increase to be between 136,900 and 138,500 deaths (based on late registrations from the previous 5 years).
