Robots as care assistants for the elderly - presentation of the SMiLE project


In future, robot assistants will be able to support people at home or in care facilities if the tasks associated with everyday life become too much of a burden. Researchers at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) working on the SMiLE project have developed technologies that provide efficient daily assistance to people requiring care or with special needs. The project was presented to the Bavarian State Minister of Economic Affairs, Energy and Technology, Franz Josef Pschierer, and the general public on 7 and 8 May in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

HP3 'Mole' en route to the Red Planet - NASA InSight probe launched with DLR experiment on board


Over the course of a few months, the HP3 'Mole' developed by the German Aerospace Centre (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) will burrow up to five metres deep into the Red Planet to explore its inner structure. This will be the first time that a fully automatic self-hammering probe of this sort has been used. The experiment is part of the NASA InSight mission to Mars, which launched on 5 May 2018. At 13:05 CEST (04:05 local time), an Atlas 401 rocket took off from the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California carrying the probe on board. The geophysical observatory is set to land just north of the Martian equator, on the Elysium Planitia plain, on 26 November 2018, having travelled for half a year, covering almost 500 million kilometres. There the small HP3 penetrometer will hammer into the Martian surface. It will remain there for about two years, providing data about the temperature gradient in the subsurface. Scientists want to understand how the interior of Mars developed, whether it still has a hot, liquid core, and what makes the Earth so special in comparison.

Hammering down to Martian depths – countdown to NASA's InSight mission - The DLR experiment HP3 will be the first to fully automatically burrow five metres into the Martian soil


The formation of planets and the occurrence of volcanism and earthquakes are determined by the thermally driven forces acting inside a planet. Continents and life as we know it emerged on Earth. On Mars, the internal development dynamics slowed rapidly. To decipher the interior of Mars and its past in more detail, and to find out what makes Earth so unique, an Atlas launch vehicle will lift off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 13:05 CEST (04:05 local time) on 5 May, carrying NASA's Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport (InSight) lander to Mars. Upon its arrival on 26 November 2018, InSight will touch down just north of the equator, on the Elysium Planitia plain, where it will commence its work as a geophysical observatory. This will be the first mission to Mars to focus on exploring the planet's interior and its 4.5-billion-year history. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is contributing one of the three principal experiments of the NASA InSight mission, HP3 – a small probe that will hammer five metres deep into the Martian soil to measure temperature and thermal conductivity at various depths to determine the heat flow from deep inside the planet. The resource-saving key technology developed by DLR has already been used in road construction in China, for agriculture in Poland and in avalanche surveillance in Switzerland.

Aviation - new technology for the manufacture of CFRP components - World's first pressure bulkhead demonstrator manufactured from carbon fibre reinforced plastic made at DLR-ZLP

A perfectly manufactured pressure bulkhead is essential for safe flight. This component forms an airtight barrier between the passenger cabin – and the rest of the pressurised fuselage – and the tail section. Only with this bulkhead can the correct air pressure be maintained in the aircraft. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has demonstrated an innovative technology that enables the welding of pressure bulkheads made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). Using this method, DLR's Center for Lightweight-Production-Technology (Zentrum fuer Leichtbauproduktionstechnologie; ZLP) in Augsburg was able to produce a 1:1 scale demonstrator component very quickly. The production-quality pressure bulkhead for aircraft of the A320 family was designed by leading aeronautics industry supplier Premium AEROTEC and manufactured in collaboration with a number of research establishments. The CFRP component is now on display at the ILA Berlin Air Show.

25th anniversary of the D-2 mission – precursor to German and European research on the ISS

Hans Schlegel and Ulrich Walter, together with the United States crew members of the German-US Spacelab mission, still remember 26 April 1993 vividly: "For me personally, preparing and carrying out the D-2 mission is among the most exciting and intense experiences of my 66 years," says Hans Schlegel, who was the payload specialist of the D-2 crew. His fellow astronaut Ulrich Walter summarises the mission with the US Spacelab research laboratory as follows: "If I were to organise the most effective research mission with the best possible crew for the job today, I would do it exactly the same way."

Launch of Sentinel-3B – twin satellites united in space - Copernicus programme Earth observation mission explores the climate impact of the oceans

The Sentinel-3 satellite pair, one of the principal components of the European Copernicus programme, is now united in space. On 25 April 2018 at 19:57 CEST (20:57 local time) the Earth observation satellite Sentinel-3B lifted off on a Russian Rockot launcher from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. "The twin satellites will now monitor Earth together," explains Michael Nyenhuis, responsible for the Sentinel-3 mission at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) Space Administration. "Once Sentinel 3B has been successfully commissioned in orbit, the system will be fully operational and we will receive valuable additional data."

Copernicus Masters enters next round

The new competition season is underway. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is once again looking for the best application ideas in the area of Earth observation for the Copernicus Masters. The international competition is organised by the Anwendungszentrum Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO).

"The political, business and scientific communities have a permanent need for reliable and up-to-date information in order to make decisions," explains Pascale Ehrenfreund, Chair of the DLR Executive Board. Copernicus – the European Union (EU) Earth observation programme implemented in partnership with the European Space Agency (ESA), the Member States and others – aims to provide this information based on Earth observation data. Copernicus delivers valuable data on Earth's surface, atmosphere, oceans, disaster situations, climate change and security.

DLR at ILA Berlin 2018 - research aircraft, uncrewed flight, experiments for the Space Station and an Antarctic greenhouse

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will present its latest projects and research results at the ILA Berlin Air Show from 25 to 29 April 2018. Again one of the largest institutional exhibitors in 2018, DLR will provide fascinating insights into its current research on an approximately 700-square-metre stand in Hall 4, in the Space Pavilion, on the stand of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) in Hall 2, and at the ILA CareerCenter in Hall 1. DLR will also use the outdoor area at ILA to showcase a large part of its research fleet – with various helicopters and aircraft – including its largest fleet member, the A320 ATRA, as well as a variety of experimental aircraft for uncrewed flight.

DLR will report daily from ILA on Twitter and Facebook. The two DLR press conferences (25 April at 10:00 and 26 April at 10:00) will be broadcast live on the social media platform YouTube.

Hyperspectral instrument DESIS en route to International Space Station in 2018


The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) and the United States corporation Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE) are announcing the completion of the development and manufacturing process of the DESIS hardware. Operating the DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer (DESIS) on the International Space Station (ISS) makes DLR the first user of the revolutionary multiplatform system MUSES (Multi User System for Earth Sensing) that was installed on board the ISS in 2017. The launch of the DESIS joint venture is scheduled for summer 2018 from Cape Canaveral and will be lifted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

Understanding climate processes in the atmosphere - Second DLR Conference on Climate Change in Cologne


Why is Earth's climate changing? It is considered extremely likely that global warming is caused by a rise in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane due to human activity. How these changes impact the numerous processes taking place in Earth's climate system remains uncertain. Renowned climate researchers and representatives of international organisations will gather from 17 to 19 April 2018 to discuss how aviation and aerospace research can contribute to improving our understanding of atmospheric processes, and how the negative implications of climate change can be addressed. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has organised the conference for the second time in collaboration with the United Nations Office for Outer Space (UNOOSA).

DLR at the Hannover Messe 2018 - Flexible energy systems through sector coupling – and a dexterous robot


Energy is more than electricity; in order to increase the proportion of renewable energy not only in power generation but also in the areas of heating and mobility, energy must be transferred from one sector to another. At the Hannover Messe, from 23 to 27 April 2018, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will show how the coupling of sectors makes the energy system more flexible and more environmentally friendly (Hall 27, Stand H84). With the theme 'Science2Business', DLR is presenting innovations and new ideas that have been developed from research results and are now on the threshold of market introduction (Hall 2, Stand C75).

DLRmagazine 157 – A perfect duet


A spectacular chase in the sky is featured in the DLRmagazine 157: NASA's DC-8 flies behind the DLR research aircraft ATRA and analyses its wake. In order to be able to successfully analyse the effect of biofuels on aircraft emissions, the ideal circumstances included low temperature and humid air as these allow clear contrails to be formed. By using special forecasting techniques the scientists from NASA and DLR found just the right region over Germany needed for their flight campaign. The aim of the campaign was to learn how biofuels affect aircraft emissions and contrails. The large quantity of data from the flights in the exhaust stream show how the climate impact of aviation can be reduced.

Talking about data: the volumes of data involved in creating digital twins of aircraft components are larger than ever before. Modelling these components is a mammoth task, especially if it must display the entire development process and life cycle of an aircraft. The vision: data packets that move through the development like a digital thread. Tomorrow's aircraft will become more economical, efficient and environmentally friendly.

Sixth DLR Industrial Days at Lampoldshausen - Microlaunchers – a reorganisation of the route to space


The Ariane launch vehicle family and the Vega launcher guarantee Europe's independent access to space. With an eye on the now rapidly changing situation in the launch market, the question is being asked – how can this successful portfolio of space launchers be expanded in the future? Additionally, what is the outlook in this for new and unconventional ideas? As part of the 6th Industrial Days at the Lampoldshausen site of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) on 11 and 12 April 2018, leading representatives of space agencies, industry and academia are discussing visionary concepts beyond the established launch systems. Participants are addressing, in particular, the challenges that future technologies, such as reusable launch systems, digitalisation and the construction of large satellite constellations, will entail.

Ismenia Patera - impact crater or supervolcano?


Images from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) operated by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft show the collapsed depression Ismenia Patera. There are two hypotheses regarding the formation of this geological structure – it is either an impact crater or the caldera of a Martian supervolcano.

Lettuces, cucumbers and radishes - First harvest in the Antarctic greenhouse EDEN ISS


While the temperatures in the Antarctic gradually drop below 20 degrees Celsius and the Sun barely rises above the horizon, the plants being cultivated in the experimental greenhouse EDEN ISS are growing and thriving. After the first three weeks, Paul Zabel from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has, over the last few days, harvested the first crops in the cold environment. The first harvest produced 3.6 kilograms of lettuce, 70 radishes and 18 cucumbers. What is now destined to enrich the diet of the overwintering crew demonstrates how astronauts on future Moon and Mars missions could be supplied with fresh produce.

Nitrogen oxides and particulates over Asia: HALO research aircraft measures the emissions of megacities


Air quality in major cities is a hot topic, especially with regard to road traffic and residents' health. However, emissions do not just remain in conurbations. Instead, particles and gaseous pollutants can often be transported thousands of kilometres by the wind. This scenario is particularly relevant in Asia, home to the world's largest concentration of megacities. From 10 March to 9 April 2018, the German Aerospace Centre (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is conducting research flights from Tainan in Taiwan, in order to more closely examine the spread and transformation of emissions from major cities, such as Manila, Taipei, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The University of Bremen is the scientific base of the international project known as EMeRGe (Effect of Megacities on the transport and transformation of pollutants on the Regional and Global scales). The aim is to better understand and predict the extent and impact of urban air pollution on Earth's atmosphere. Previously, the researchers studied European conurbations from the air.

Exhibition 'The Call of the Mountains' opens at the Gasometer Oberhausen - A 67-million-pixel floating Matterhorn


At 4478 metres tall, the Matterhorn is not one of Earth's highest mountains – not even the highest mountain in the Alps. However, its striking triangular shape makes it unique. The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has measured this 'rock pyramid' with the help of satellite and aircraft overflights and, from the data, generated a precise terrain model that now brings the mountain to Gasometer Oberhausen as a 3D projection on a 17-metre-high reproduction of the Matterhorn. There, it floats upside down in the 100-metre-high airspace of the Gasometer as the highlight of the exhibition 'The Call of the Mountains', which was inaugurated on 16 March 2018. A mirror on the floor reflects the mountain, enabling a bird's eye view.

The 31st German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) parabolic flight campaign ended successfully on 9 March 2018. Twelve experiments in the fields of human physiology, biology, physics, technology testing and materials science took place on board the A310 ZERO-G, dealing with investigations into the birth of stars, plasma physics, the behaviour of molten materials in zero gravity and blood circulation in the human body, amongst other things. The campaign took place in Bordeaux, where the company Novespace, which conducts parabolic flight campaigns on behalf of the DLR Space Administration, is based. "The experiments remain exciting, even after 18 years of research on parabolic flights, as many participants are breaking new scientific or technological ground in their questions," said Katrin Stang, Programme Manager for DLR's parabolic flights.

Step by step towards Mars - DLR 'mole' HP3 and its spacecraft transported to their launch site


The first 1480 kilometres from Denver to the launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California have been completed – aboard an aircraft. The InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) lander will now have to travel the remaining 485 million kilometres to Mars alone, following its planned launch on 5 May 2018. Its mission is to thoroughly explore the Red Planet. SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure), a seismometer, provided by the French space agency, CNES (Centre national d'etudes spatiales), will record Martian tremors; the HP3 (Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package) sensor package from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will analyse the thermal flow from the interior and the physical properties of the Martian surface; and the RISE (Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment) experiment supplied by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will measure the changes in orientation of the planet's spin axis. But before this, the spacecraft and the instruments on board must undergo final functional tests and inspections to ensure that all components have survived transportation to the launch site without damage.
