Ismenia Patera - impact crater or supervolcano?


Images from the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) operated by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft show the collapsed depression Ismenia Patera. There are two hypotheses regarding the formation of this geological structure – it is either an impact crater or the caldera of a Martian supervolcano.
