New thrust for Ariane 6 - Production of the new Vinci thrust chamber starts in Ottobrunn


Space travel is not possible without launchers. Every space activity is based on this simple fact. Launcher systems connect Earth to space. They transport people and materials into space and deliver research and commercial satellites to orbit. Launchers provide the only way to conduct scientific research and ensure commercial utilisation of space. But to survive in today's competitive environment, access to space must also be economically viable. "Europe's response to this challenge is the new Ariane 6 launcher with its innovative, cost-effective and reignitable, next-generation upper stage engine. The combustion chamber – the 'heart' of the engine – and other important components are made in Germany. This is the result of the competence and skills – unparalleled in Europe – that have been developed thanks to, among others, funding from the Space Administration at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR)," emphasised Gerd Gruppe, DLR Executive Board member responsible for the Space Administration. Production at ArianeGroup in Ottobrunn began on 28 June 2017 – an important milestone for Europe's gateway to space.

ONS releases - Economic Well-being: Jan to Mar 2017, our new economic well-being dashboard, and Beyond GDP: Measuring the economic well-being of individuals

View in browser 6 July 2017 Economic Well-being: Jan to Mar 2017 The latest indicators that give us a more rounded and comprehensive basis for assessing changes in economic well-being have been published today.  Gross domestic product (GDP) per head in the UK was unchanged (0.0% growth) compared with the previous quarter and increased by 1.3% compared with the same quarter a year ago (Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) 2016). Net national disposable income (NNDI) per head increased by 4.3% between Quarter 1 2016 and Quarter 1 2017, mainly due to a £6.9 billion increase in the income received from the UK's foreign direct investment from abroad. Despite improvements in both GDP per head and NNDI per head, real household disposable income (RHDI) per head declined by 2.0% in Quarter 1 2017 compared with the same quarter a year ago – the largest decrease since the end of 2011, driven by increasing prices of goods and services. Digital pilot in the cockpit – the A-PiMod project receives the German Mobility Award


The idea behind the A-PiMod project is to install a digital pilot in the cockpit to provide its human colleagues with in-flight advice. The research was conducted by the Institute of Flight Guidance at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), in cooperation with seven partners from science and industry. A-PiMod was honoured with the German Mobility Award as a lighthouse project for smart mobility on 28 June 2017 in Berlin.
