MATS2017 Full Programme Announced

MATS2017 Line Up Announced For 2017 MATS opened to external abstract submission for the first time, resulting in an exciting programme of presentations and flash talks over three days. Day 1 will see an impressive line up of invited keynote speakers from across academia, industry and government, including Royal Navy, Satellite Applications Catapult, Boeing, Schlumberger, Kongsberg and three universities. The day will conclude with a NEXUSS and Roboacademy student poster session during the icebreaker event.  Days 2 and 3 will feature presentations from industry and academia, giving an exciting snapshot of activity across the four conference pillars:  1. Applications -  Current Reality and Aspirations 2. Enabling Technologies to enhance our understanding of the marine environment 3. "Making systems Smarter" - the advance from Automatic to Autonomy 4. The economic, environmental and  human benefits of autonomous systems The conference will conclude with a MASSMO4 workshop on the afternoon of Day 3, convened by the MASSMO co-ordinator, Prof Russell Wynn (restricted to MASSMO4 partners only). For further details please contact Ian Folger, Event Manager by clicking here  UK International Marine Autonomous Systems Regulatory Conference 2017 (MASRWG2017) 16 - 17 November 2017 National Oceanography Centre, European Way, Southampton, SO14 3ZH 2017 has seen significant developments in the regulatory backdrop for Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) as the Maritime Safety Committee at IMO have now accepted a scoping exercise into their work programme. Meanwhile the UK MAS Regulatory Working Group have been preparing a voluntary Code of Practice which is expected to be launched at the 3rd Annual Conference. This will take place at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton on the 16 and 17 November. The programme will include key note speakers on both days. Speakers and panels will address issues relating to Regulation, the Human Element and Cyber Security on the first day. Heading off to the eternal ice - EDEN ISS greenhouse en route to Antarctica

The venture to cultivate plants in the Antarctic is gathering momentum: on 8 October 2017 the special EDEN ISS greenhouse container, packed safely away on a cargo ship, left the Port of Hamburg en route to the Ekstroem ice shelf in the Antarctic. The journey will last approximately 11 weeks. The EDEN ISS team is expected to receive the high-tech greenhouse at the German Neumayer Station III of the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) shortly before Christmas. In this project, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is collaborating with international partners to investigate the fully self-sufficient cultivation of vegetables to supply food in harsh climatic environments and for future manned missions to the Moon and Mars.
