NOC News Round Up - 3 February 2017

Satallite data sheds light on polar ocean currents

Artists impression of CryoSat in orbit, from the European Space Agency

Data from the European Space Agency's CryoSat-2 satellite could help scientists study currents in the Southern and Arctic Ocean in detail that has not been possible before. This is because other satellite altimeters currently do not sample these areas well enough. The first truly global scientific assessment and validation of ocean data from CryoSat-2, by NOC scientists, shows it is fit for use in oceanography. Crucial to this work has been the NOC's expertise in the crossroad between satellite technology, in-situ observations and models of the marine environment. A download of this paper, published in Remote Sensing of Environment, is available for a limited time by following this link.

New animations of our marine robotics

Earlier this week new animations and videos were made available on our YouTube channel that demonstrate how the CODEMAP project used marine robotics to study life in submarine canyons.

Science and Technology Fair for government

BEIS visit

Representatives from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and the Natural Environment Research Council visited the NOC in Southampton on Wednesday for a 'Science and Technology Fair' including a morning of tours around the Marine Robotics Innovation Centre and the RRS James Cook.

The aim was to showcase, in a series of hands-on demonstrations, our development and commercialisation of technology and the innovative science underway from coast to deep ocean. On show were deep sea rock samples from the recently returned Marine e-tech expedition, live sensor demonstrations and the latest in marine system modelling. After lunch on board the ship the delegation enjoyed tours of the Discovery Collections and the British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility.

Virtual 360 tour of RRS Discovery

The 360 degree images from on board the RRS Discovery, uploaded to Google Maps during our big outreach event in October, have had their 50,000th view this week.

If you didn't get a chance to tour the ship in Liverpool then hop on board now and have a look around the UK's newest royal research ship!
