UK police thwart suspected Westminster terror attack

Police detain man

Good morning, and welcome to the Morning Mail.

Among the stories leading our website this morning: A suspected terrorist attack in the UK was foiled after armed police arrested a man who is alleged to have been found carrying knives near Britain's Houses of Parliament, metres from where the attack on the Westminster Bridge was launched five weeks ago.

Police were tracking and waiting for the man, who was arrested near parliament on suspicion of "commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism". The Guardian understands the operation was triggered following a tip-off to police by a member of Britain's Muslim community who was concerned about the man's behaviour.

Keep reading for the rest of the top stories this morning, with more news from around Australia and the world.
