Exploring sea-floor communities in Greenland

Seafloor faunal community of sponges and cold-water corals at ~650m water depth offshore W Greenland

This week the team on board RRS Discovery are continuing their work offshore in western Greenland as part of the ICY-LAB project. NOC's Veerle Huvenne is on board, together with the Isis ROV team, to map deep-sea habitats on the Greenland margin, which include spectacular sponge and cold-water coral communities (pictured above). This habitat mapping work is based on the methods and techniques developed during CODEMAP, and includes novel ways to image steep cliffs in deep water. The data gathered in this way will help to shed light on the role of sea-bed communities in the silica cycle of the Labrador Sea and Atlantic Ocean.
