Struvite occurs naturally in decomposing organic materials but it can crystallize on equipment surfaces in water treatment plants, causing significant damage. An NSF-funded researcher is studying how struvite crystals form at the molecular level, promising to lead to a cheaper, less energy-intensive conversion method to recover plant-friendly nutrients and eventually greater sustainability in wastewater treatment and in agriculture.
