RRS Discovery departs ahead of expedition to South Georgia
Early tomorrow, the RRS Discovery will leave Southampton for an ambitious science expedition to the waters around South Georgia. This expedition will take place around 100 years after the Discovery committee was set up and later commissioned a series of investigations in the same area of the Southern Ocean. These investigations were onboard the original RRS Discovery, first used by Captain Scott, and laid the foundations of modern biological oceanography. The science conducted on this latest expedition will be key to dramatically improving our understanding of how the climate is affected by life in the 'twilight' zone, which is the part of the ocean between 100 and 1000 metres, where only a vanishingly small amount of sunlight reaches. This expedition forms part of the COMICS project, which now has a YouTube playlist. Click here to find out why Principal Investigator, Professor Richard Sanders, is excited about the historical link. Alternatively, in this video, Dr Steph Henson talks us through the preparations for one of the innovative bits of technology that will be used on this expedition.
Yesterday, BBC South Today covered this story in two broadcasts, which are still available for the next few hours. Click here to watch the evening news broadcast (starts at 11:40 minutes) or here to watch late news (starts at 06:58 minutes - and this broadcast has the correct names and job titles).
Why is this year's hurricane season so bad?
Earlier this week, Professor Judith Wolf talked to the BBC's Science Editor, David Shukman, about why this year's hurricane season is so severe. Click here to read an updated statement from NOC scientists about this year's hurricanes and storm surges.
Also, this week on the NOC dock...
....we were joined by historian and presenter Dan Snow.
To find out why Dan and this gentleman (dressed in an impressively historically accurate outfit) were filming at the NOC, we're afraid you will have to wait to watch the BBC's The One Show next April.
