NOC contributes to G7 Science Ministers Meeting This week saw the 2017 Ministerial Meeting on Science take place in Turin, Italy. Ministers and senior officials from across the G7 congratulated the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Working Group on the significant progress it has made since Ministers last met in May 2016. The Working Group, which is made up of marine scientists and government science ministries from across the G7, is being led by the UK Government's Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy with the NOC and NERC playing an integral part in driving forward Working Group activities, with support from the NOC Association. NOC at Marine and Coastal Civil Engineering Expo Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) hosted by the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC), exhibited at the Marine and Coastal Civil Engineering Expo in London's ExCeL this week.   Interest during the show from the industry was around accessing marine data for informing engineering decisions, product testing and providing background information prior to site investigations. MEDIN also provided input to attendees of the Flood and Contamination Expos which were held alongside MCCE, as marine data informs oil spill response and coastal flood defense. River and estuary project Workshop at NOC Southampton This week the NOC hosted a workshop for the LOCATE project, in which project objectives and progress were presented. The workshop also provided those attending with the opportunity to help shape the next phases of project work and explore potential future collaboration. LOCATE has reached a critical point, in which the sampling of rivers and estuaries in Great Britain is close to being complete, and work is being planned to process the resulting data. NOC at Nelson Mandela University New Campus Opening NOC's Associate Director for Innovation and Enterprise, Kevin Forshaw attended the opening of the new Ocean Sciences Campus at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) - South Africa's first and only campus dedicated to marine research and technology. Prof. Mike Roberts, who holds a joint NMU-NOC Research Chair in Ocean Science and Marine Food Security commented, "This partnership creates an invaluable innovation bridge between the NOC and Nelson Mandela University, with a continuous flow of people and research between the northern hemisphere and Africa. SOLSTICE, is just the first of many collaborative projects with the NOC that we hope will address the challenges facing West Indian Oceans and communities." Read more. Helping the blue economy in Small Island Developing States The NOC's Dr Judith Wolf and Alex Callaway from Cefas have been in St Vincent this week as part of the Commonwealth Marine Economies Programme. Their work in year one of the programme, to provide habitat maps to the St Vincent government, will now be disseminated to inform sustainable blue development. While there, they visited the radar tide gauge at Calliaqua with acting Director of Maritime Administration, Kemron Beache. Community Outreach On Tuesday evening NOC's Dr Leigh Marsh joined a group of 12 to 16 year olds at the Southampton Young Carers Project, which provides a service for children and young people aged between 8 and 18 whose lives are affected by caring for an unwell or disabled family member. The group's recent meetings have been themed around 'aspirations' and Leigh joined them to provide some insights into getting into university and studying science.
