SPE Offshore Europe 2017 and opportunity for user-driven workshop
Earlier this month, NOC representatives headed up to Aberdeen to attend Europe's leading offshore exploration and production event, SPE Offshore Europe. Dr Daniel Jones presented the NOC's contribution to the development and operation of marine autonomous systems in decommissioning, while Business Development Manager, Christine Sams and Offshore Data Consultant, Jill Burgess met with existing and potential users of NOC's suite of marine and offshore data products, including the software package POLPRED.
As a result of these discussions with industry users, the NOC is looking to arrange a half-day POLPRED user workshop in Aberdeen next year, to share ideas and provide an opportunity for industry to speak directly to NOC researchers about other potential practical applications of our coastal and ocean modelling capabilities and software tools.

The Space Sector - Think it might not be relevant to your company? Think again!
Next week, the NOC will participate in a workshop focussing on how space and non-space companies can make the most of the recent government investment in the sector. Owners and directors of start-ups, growing businesses and SMEs across the region are invited to attend the event, which will provide expert knowledge on a range of funding options to support the growth of their enterprise.
ERL Emergency Robots is a civilian, outdoor robotics competition, with a focus on realistic, multi-domain emergency response scenarios. Inspired by the 2011 Fukushima accident, the ERL Emergency Grand Challenge can only be overcome when land, underwater and flying robots successfully cooperate.
Andrea commented "The competition saw a number of International teams surveying the scenario, collecting data, searching for missing workers and identifying critical hazards. The judges were impressed by the standard of entries and it is certainly an exciting time for marine autonomy and highlights further how these intelligent systems can be used in such hazardous environments."
NOC at Annual OSRL ITAC Conference
This week, the NOC's Dr. Andrew Gates will be presenting at Oil Spill Response Limited's (OSRL) annual Industry Technical Advisory Committee (ITAC) meeting hosted at the Plymouth Marine Lab. Driven by OSRL as part of its advocacy programme, the meeting aims to engage OSRL response staff in industry and academic technical discussions which are central to developing more effective oil spill response.
Andrew will be presenting the future developments of Marine Autonomous Systems (MAS) in oil spill response and will present the findings of the recent OSRL Autonomy project, which formed part of a recent Knowledge Exchange Fellowship between NOC and OSRL. More information on the workshop can be found here.
The first day of MATS will see an impressive line up of invited keynote speakers from across academia, industry and government organisations, including the Royal Navy, Satellite Applications Catapult, University partners, Boeing, Schlumberger and Kongsberg. The full programme for the event will be announced in early October and we've received a number of high-quality abstracts addressing our core conference pillars.
This three day event will also feedback on the 2017 Year of Autonomy and the 2017 Marine Autonomous Systems in Support of Marine Operations (MASSMO) deployment, as well as including a full social programme.
During MATS 2016 we launched the 2017 Year of Autonomy, with a number of industry partners and the Knowledge Transfer Network. This year has so far seen three events hosted by QinetiQ, University of Southampton and University of Portsmouth, addressing key challenges for autonomy on land, sea and in air. The final two events will be held in Newquay and Plymouth in October, and will focus on Societal Acceptance and Energy Management.
