05-12-2017 11:05 AM CET The centrepiece of the meeting on 4 December consisted of a hearing on the EU Forest Strategy jointly organised by the AGRI, ENVI and ITRE committees. Its purpose was to assess progress in implementation of the Forest Strategy and to hear the views of stakeholders on cross-cutting forest related issues, such as rural development policy, the bioeconomy and innovation, climate change and biodiversity. Speakers had been invited from DG AGRI, the European Forest Institute, the Finnish Agriculture Ministry, the Confederation of European Forest Owners, State Forests (Poland), FERN and the expert group of the European Academics Science Advisory Council (EASAC). The Commission had announced in its 2017 Annual Work Programme that it would "take forward work and consult widely on simplification and modernisation of the Common Agricultural Policy to maximise its contribution to the Commission's ten priorities and to the Sustainable Development Goals", focusing on specific policy priorities and taking into account the opinion of the Refit Platform. DG AGRI undertook a public consultation in early 2017 which received over 320,000 online responses as well as over 1,400 position papers and carried out an impact assessment (IA) of alternative scenarios for the future of the CAP. The public consultation and IA have been a valuable source of information for the communication.
