Index of cancer survival for CCGs, STPs and England

This statistical bulletin and associated tables, produced jointly by ONS and PHE, present the one-year all cancer survival index in adults diagnosed 2000 to 2015 and followed up to 2016 for Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs), Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) and England. Similar five-year and ten-year survival estimates are also presented for STPs and England, with further results included for breast, colorectal and lung cancer.

The publication shows that cancer survival for adults has continued to improve and the inequality gap between areas has shrunk. For example:

  • The one-year all-cancer survival index for England increased steadily from 61.2% for patients diagnosed in 2000 to 72.3% in 2015.
  • The one-year all-cancer survival index increased steadily in most CCGs throughout that period; for patients diagnosed in 2015, the all-cancer survival index for CCGs ranged from 67.0% to 77.4%, compared with 49.5% to 66.6% in 2000.
  • STPs have been included in the bulletin for the first time; for patients diagnosed in 2015, the all-cancer survival index for STPs ranged from 70.0% to 75.1%, compared with 55.5% to 65.9% based on data for 2000.

Annual update of all indicators in the profile tool on fingertips, to include the latest year of data and trends at GP practice, CCG and National level. The indicators provide information on demographics; cancer screening; Two-Week Wait referrals; diagnostic services; emergency presentations and admissions.

The associated short statistical summary and list of the indicators, also available from the above link show:

  • Since 2015/16, there has been a decrease in the proportion of females screened for breast cancer in the last 36 months, a decrease in the proportion of females screened for cervical cancer and an increase in the proportion of individuals screened for bowel cancer in the last 30 months.
  • The rate of Two-Week Wait referrals for suspected cancer increased between 2015/16 and 2016/17 from 2,975 to 3,164 per 100,000 population. Over the same period the proportion of Two-Week Wait referrals that resulted in a cancer diagnosis decreased from 7.8% to 7.6%.
