The House on Thursday again approved a short-term spending bill to keep the government open for a few weeks, and also provided a short-term extension of health insurance for children of low-income families. Congress has been unable to come to agreement on long-term government spending levels since the 2017 fiscal year ended in September. Instead, the government has been operating on a series of short-term extensions of last year's budget. The current extension expires Friday; the bill passed by the House would extend funding through January 19. The Senate still has to approve the bill to prevent a government shutdown over the holiday weekend.
