New campaign to raise awareness of the risks of STIs

PHE has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the risks of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) with a particular focus on two of the most prevalent infections, chlamydia and gonorrhoea. Diagnoses of STIs remain high across England (420,000 cases in 2016), particularly among young people and in 2016, the majority (51%) of new STI diagnosis were in young adults aged 15-24. Due to the symptomless nature of the infections, and the potential risk of these going undiagnosed, there is a real need for young people to practise safe sex and reduce the spread of STIs. The campaign seeks to  reduce the rates of these STIs through increased condom use.To find out more about STIs and condom use, visit www.nhs.uk/protect-against-stis-use-a-condom.

PHE gets permission for public health science campus and HQ

PHE has been given planning permission to create a world-class public health science campus at Harlow in Essex. The landmark decision helps secure PHE's role as a global leader in applying cutting-edge science to protect and improve the public's health for the next generation through the creation of a 'state-of-the-art' centre of national and international scientific expertise. PHE Harlow, as the campus will be known, is expected to employ up to 2,750 people by 2024, with scope for further expansion. The campus will allow PHE to fully embrace the new technologies of whole genome sequencing, public health interventions and 'big data' and transform the delivery of public health science for many years to come. The next step in 2018 will be the preparation of the site for the construction. Building work is expected to start in 2019 with phased occupation starting in 2021.

Local Authority HIV Sexual and Reproductive Health Epidemiology Reports (LASERs) are now available

Local Authority HIV Sexual and Reproductive Health Epidemiology Reports are now available via the password protected PHE HIV and STI portal. The LASERs bring together a range of local HIV, sexual and reproductive health (HSRH) intelligence in one document for local authorities to identify burden, trends and population groups and geographical areas of greater need. They are produced to support local authorities to identify priorities, to target sexual health promotion activity and to commission HSRH services. For other publically available downloadable SRH summary documents at both upper and lower tier local authority level, please access the SRH profiles Local Area Profiles. For further information about local sexual health intelligence please contact your local Field Epidemiology Service team.

1.4 million people referred to NHS mental health therapy in the past year

Over one million referrals to NHS talking therapies for depression and anxiety were made last year according to new, official data. Of the 1.4 million new referrals for talking therapies as part of NHS England's Increasing Access to Talking Therapies (IAPT) programme, 965,000 people began treatment, a 32,000 rise on patient numbers from the year before. As well as increasing numbers of people getting treatment, performance statistics for 2016/17 show that waiting times are decreasing and recovery rates improving. The number of people recovering from their condition has increased on the previous 12 months, with over 50 per cent of patients making a recovery in every month of this year.

All Our Health Social Learning Programme

PHE is leading a 'call to action' for all health and care professionals (HCPs) to embed and extend prevention, health protection and promotion of wellbeing and resilience into everyday practice. To help us further engage HCP's, PHE will be running, throughout January and February, a social media learning programme of activities called 'WeLearn #AllOurHealth' – a PHE and WeCommunities collaboration.  Social learning is learning out loud, in social media spaces for about 10 minutes a day. Much of the learning will take place through both formal and informal discussion on Twitter.  Throughout the 6 weeks that 'WeLearn #AllOurHealth' runs, we will be covering all of the All Our Health framework.
