Breaking: Senators block bill to keep government funded past midnight; shutdown almost certain

Having trouble viewing this email? | View it in your browser   The Senate rejected a short-term spending bill Friday night that would have extended government funding for four weeks, almost certainly triggering a partial government shutdown at midnight. Lawmakers negotiated throughout the day but were unable to get a deal that could garner the 60 votes needed for passage in the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell held the vote open, but opponents had already cast more than enough votes to scuttle the bill. Without a dramatic reversal before midnight, government agencies will begin ramping down operations Saturday, the one-year anniversary of President Trump's inauguration.
