Highlights - 19-20-21 March: Migration, Debt, post-Cotonou and humanitarian aid hearings - Committee on Development

On Monday, 19 March, the Foreign Affairs, the Development and the Civil Liberties committees jointly discussed preparations of a Global Compact for Migration with the UN's Special Representative Louise Arbour. DEVE also discussed reports on forests management and on the rights of indigenous peoples. Protracted crises were discussed with Peter Maurer of the ICRC. Hearings on post-Cotonou and on humanitarian law took place on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.

  • DEVE meeting: 19-20 March (ASP 3E-2)
  • Hearing on new agreement with Africa, Carribean and Pacific: Tuesday, 14:30-17:00 (ASP 3E-2)
  • Joint hearing with DROI on emergencies and humanitarian law: Wednesday, 21 March, 14:30-16:30 (ASP 3E-2)
Votes on Tuesday morning were on debt sustainability and on a report on the implementation of development and humanitarian aid instruments.

Hearings: Tuesday afternoon (14:30-17:00) was devoted to a hearing on the upcoming negotiations for a new 'post-Cotonou' partnership agreement with ACP countries. On Wednesday afternoon, DEVE joined the subcommittee on Human Rigths for a hearing on emergencies and humanitarian law (programme below).

The future of food and farming and the EU's civil protection mechanism was also discussed in the DEVE meeting, following the post-Cotonou hearing.
