Three road construction vehicles in action
During an extraordinary meeting in Strasbourg on 16 April, Members of the BUDG committee will discuss a recent application by Belgium to mobilise the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF). The application concerns a contribution from the EU budget of EUR 4,6 million aimed at facilitating the re-integration into the labour market of 2 287 workers made redundant by Caterpillar Solar Gosselies and five suppliers in the Belgian province of Hainaut in the course of 2017.

In addition, assistance will also be given to up to 300 young people not in employment, education or training under the age of 30.

This is Belgium's second EGF application in relation to Caterpillar. In 2014, EU assistance was granted to 1 399 redundant Caterpillar workers. The current proposal covers the remaining workers following the closure of all Caterpillar's activities in Belgium.

The vote in committee will take place on 23-24 April.

Moldovan flags on a line
A five-member BUDG delegation, chaired by MEP Siegfried Mureşan (EPP), traveled to Moldova from 3 to 6 April 2018, with the aim of learning more about the concrete use of EU financial support, assessing the quality of implementation and effectiveness on the ground, and evaluating Moldova's current and future needs for assistance through the Union budget. Members held official meetings with Moldovan Ministers and relevant Moldovan parliamentary committees,

and met local stakeholders to discuss how smart and inclusive growth, judicial reform and the fight against corruption can be promoted even more effectively through the EU budget and the next Multiannual Financial Framework.

Upon its return, the delegation will report on its findings to the full committee.

Part of the programme was coordinated with the AFET committee and the Delegation of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee.
