Highlights - Oral Question on 'Tackling precarious and temporary employment in the European Union' - Committee on Petitions

Clock with zero hours
At the meeting of 24 April, the Committee will consider a draft oral question to the European Commission regarding precarious and temporary employment in the EU. The question points to concerns raised in petitions on tackling various forms of precarious employment, such as the use of zero hour contracts as well as the abusive use of fixed-term contracts in both the public and private sector.

The question asks what measures the Commission is taking in order to address these issues and ensure correct implementation of Union labour legislation, given the number of petitions received and the PETI public hearing on this subject which took place on 22 November 2017.

At its meeting of 24 April, the Committee will vote on the adoption of the PETI Opinion on the Coordination of social security systems. The Opinion relates to the European Commission proposal for amending Regulations (EC) Nos 883/2004 and 987/2009, which aim at modernising and simplifying the existing rules for social security coordination and enhancing the exercise of citizens' rights.

The PETI Committee regularly receives petitions on these issues and the opinion calls on EMPL to take into account PETI amendments to the proposal, focusing mostly on improving disability and pension benefits.
