Following interinstitutional negotiations, Parliament will vote on the so-called Waste Package during its plenary sitting of 18.04.18. The four proposed legislations amend the directives on Waste, on Packaging and Packaging Waste, on Landfill and End of Life vehicles/Batteries and on Waste electrical and electronic equipment. New targets for reuse and recycling and limits in landfill are set and should be applied from 2025. Indicative targets for Food waste are set for the first time.

Approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers
Parliament will discuss and vote the provisional interinstitutional agreement on the proposed legislation on approval and market surveillance of motor vehicles and their trailers, during its plenary sittings of 18-19.04.18. The text removes the time limit on the validity of type-approval certificates, requires Member States to provide sufficient funds for market surveillance activities, and empowers the Commission to carry out assessments of the procedures put in place, amongst other things.




Guidelines for the employment policies of the Member States: plenary vote

Employment guidelines
Parliament will vote on the report tabled by the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs on guidelines for the employment policies of the Member State, during its plenary sitting of 19.04.18. The proposed revised guidelines aim to align the text with the principles of the European pillar of social rights, with a view to improving Europe's competitiveness and making it a better place to invest, create jobs and foster social cohesion.




Subsidiarity and proportionality annual reports 2015-2016: plenary debate and vote

The Committee on Legal Affairs' report on the subsidiarity and proportionality annual reports for 2015 and 2016 will be discussed and voted by the European Parliament during its plenary sittings of 17-18.04.18. The report looks primarily at how the EU institutions and bodies have implemented these two principles and how the practice has evolved in 2015 and 2016 when compared to previous years.




Policy Departments Monthly Highlights: focus on EU-Africa cooperation

The EU and Africa need to deal with common challenges such as the creation of sustainable jobs, migration, security and the fight against climate change, together, says DEVE Committee Chair Linda McAvan, following a mission to Senegal earlier this year. Other topics featured in this issue of the Policy Departments' Monthly Highlights include CO2 emissions from international shipping, the new Silk Route, waste management, and the cooperation and verification mechanism with Bulgaria and Romania.




The Hague Judgments Project: public hearing; debates with Commissioners

Debate
The Committee on Legal Affairs will hold discussions with Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans and with Justice Commissioner Jourová on 24.04.18. These debates will be followed by a public hearing on the Hague Judgments Project, during which ongoing negotiations on a world-wide convention on the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters will be discussed.
