Penn researchers lay groundwork to better understanding optical properties of glass

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania demonstrated a new packing of glass with unique optical properties. What they learned could lead to innovations in technology, such as glass with different mechanical properties, and may elucidate some fundamental aspects of glass formation.

Smartphone app aims to allow parents, coaches, medics to detect concussion, brain injuries

University of Washington researchers are developing the first smartphone app that is capable of objectively detecting concussion and other traumatic brain injuries in the field: on the sidelines of a sports game, on a battlefield or in the home of an elderly person prone to falls.

Vanderbilt University researcher Ken Catania stuck his arm into a tank with small eel 10 times--the only way to get accurate measurements of the circuit created by animal, arm and water.

Changes in nonextreme precipitation may have not-so-subtle consequences

Illinois researchers Praveen Kumar and graduate student Susana Roque-Malo

Major floods and droughts receive a lot of attention in the context of climate change, but University of Illinois researchers analyzed over five decades of precipitation data from North America to find that changes in nonextreme precipitation are more significant than previously realized and larger than those in extreme precipitation. These changes can have a strong effect on ecosystems, agriculture, infrastructure design and resource management.
