New Earth images from GOES-16

The satellite's 1st images since its launch a few months ago. GOES-16 provides 4 times the image resolution - 4 times more detail - than earlier GOES satellites. Weather forecasters are excited!
Hole-punch clouds over southern California
They result from cold temps, air traffic, and atmospheric instability. People mistake them for UFOs! Conditions were ripe for making them over southern California last weekend. Photos here.

Asteroid buzzed Earth and moon last night

Asteroid 2017 BX - found just days ago - is about as big as a house. It passed safely Tuesday night or Wednesday, depending on your time zone.
Tonight … A winding river of stars called Eridanus
Why search for such a faint constellation? Only because it's very beautiful.

Orion Nebula: Where stars are born
Stefan Nilsson captured this image from Sweden on January 2. You can recognize the constellation Orion by his 3 Belt stars, 3 stars in a short, straight row. The Orion Nebula is that red fuzzy region in Orion's Sword, hanging from the Belt.
