NOC News Round Up - 17 November 2017

NOC in Scotland for Public Event Teams from the NOC's Marine Geoscience group and BOSCORF are spending the next four days talking to school groups and the public at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. The focus of one of the displays is deep-sea mining. Visitors are being asked, based on the information we have provided, whether they, in the position of the International Seabed Authority, would vote to protect, or prospect. The BOSCORF team are displaying a deep-sea core showing the evidence of massive tsunamis to hit the coast of Scotland and giving visitors the opportunity to see scaled up 3D printed forams (single-celled organisms). Marine Autonomy & Technology Showcase 2017 This week saw the NOC host its third Marine Autonomy and Technology Showcase (MATS2017) at the Southampton waterfront site. The three day event welcomed more than 200 delegates from eight countries to hear from 40 guest speakers from across industry and academia about the latest developments in marine autonomy and to share ideas and knowledge. The NOC is a pioneer of Marine Autonomy - a transformative technology that is contributing to the government's Industrial Strategy and continues to generate huge interest from major industry sectors including Offshore Renewable Energy, Oil and Gas, and Defence. MATS2017 brought all of this together in one place. The showcase has gone from strength to strength since it launched in 2015, and by all accounts this year's event was the biggest and best yet. Feedback from delegates and speakers has been overwhelmingly positive and plans are already well underway for next year's MATS, which will take place in November 2018. Sensors that make sense: NOC on Euro News NOC's sensors work as part of the SenseOcean project was part of a Euro News documentary aired this week. The programme available on YouTube (6.40 mins in) focuses on how NOC scientists are collecting real-time measurements of nutrient pollution in the ocean.
