Business, industry and trade Quarter 3 (July to Sept) 2017saw a sizeable increase in the value of successful cross-border and domestic mergers and acquisitions (M&A) involving UK companies; were a total of 163 successful domestic and cross-border acquisitions and disposals involving UK companies worth £86.4 billion in Quarter 3 2017, compared with 241 transactions valued at £33.2 billion in Quarter 2 (Apr to June) 2017. Outward M&A (UK companies acquiring foreign companies abroad) was the main driver for the overall total increased value of M&A activity during Quarter 3 2017. There were 33 successful outward acquisitions worth £51.1 billion, the highest quarterly value reported since Quarter 2 2000 (127 acquisitions worth £129.4 billion). The high value of outward M&A was dominated by one high value transaction. There were 52 completed inward M&A transactions (foreign companies acquiring UK companies) in Quarter 3 2017 worth £16.8 billion, a notably higher value than £3.9 billion reported for Quarter 2 2017. The value of inward disposals reached a record high of £7.1 billion in Quarter 3 2017, up from £4.0 billion in Quarter 2 2017. There were 58 successful domestic acquisitions (UK companies acquiring other UK companies) during Quarter 3 2017 worth £5.6 billion, the highest quarterly value since Quarter 2 2016 (130 acquisitions valued at £6.8 billion). The pick-up in the value of domestic M&A was mainly attributed to one large transaction in Quarter 3 2017. Economy The total net worth of the UK at the end of 2016 is estimated at £9.8 trillion, an increase of £803 billion from 2015 and the largest annual rise on record. Following its split from other assets, land has shown to be the most valuable asset in the UK, accounting for just over half of the total net worth of the UK. The value of land has grown rapidly from 1995, increasing by 412% compared with an average increase of 211% in the assets overlying the land. Financial net worth has risen by £326 billion, with loans providing the largest net increase. People, population and community Provides the quarterly number of conceptions to women aged under 18 for England and Wales by regions and other local authority areas. Weekly death figures provide provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the latest weeks for which data are available. The Economic Statistics Centre of Excellence (ESCoE) annual international conference on economic measurement takes place between 16 and 17 May 2018. The conference is being delivered in partnership with the ONS and the Bank of England. The organisers are inviting papers on all aspects of the measurement and use of statistics.
