Training courses

  • Practical Issues in Outbreak Investigation, 13 March.

    This one-day course (previously titled, Advanced Outbreak Management Course) is intended to update the skills of those who have had previous first-hand experience of infectious disease outbreak investigation by reviewing a number recent, real-life incidents and outbreaks. This includes review of: incident/outbreak management/control team terms of reference; control measures instituted; how epidemiological and microbiological evidence was collated; relations between different parties involved in incident/outbreak response; and how stakeholder and media communications were handled. The course is intended for members of local PHE health protection teams, NIS epidemiologists and public health trainees.

  • Outbreak investigation course (two days), 24-25 April.

    This structured, two-day training course providing a grounding in microbiological, epidemiological, environmental and statistical aspects of infectious disease outbreak investigation and control. The first day, on Detection and Investigation of Outbreaks, focusses on the design of cohort and case-control epidemiological studies, hypothesis generation and the use of descriptive epidemiology. A number of recent, real-life incidents and outbreaks will be considered.

    The second day, Outbreak Investigation and Analytical Epidemiology, considers statistical aspects of epidemiological investigations, including critical appraisal of epidemiological data,  in more depth. Participants are required to have a basic understanding of statistical analysis (sampling protocols, "p" values, confidence intervals, etc) although exercises using statistical software are not involved.
