How to filter microplastics out of the ocean This week NOC scientist Nina Faure Beaulieu has taken some time out of her busy schedule of research at sea to put together a video outlining the processes she is using to filter microplastics out of the South Atlantic ocean. RRS James Cook in the South Atlantic The RRS James Cook is currently sailing towards Cape Town sampling the ocean to better understand how it moves and stores heat and carbon. This forms part of the NOC led ORCHESTRA and TICTOC research projects. This week Jean-Philippe Gac wrote in the expedition blog: "The ocean is a formidable CO2 scavenger: it absorbs a quarter of anthropogenic emissions. But how does the ocean react to the continued increase in anthropogenic CO2 input? It is to answer this question that our expedition was implemented: to understand the CO2 cycles in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, and to compare their evolution with those of past expeditions." Follow to ORCHESTRA project on twitter @ORCHESTRAPROJ International Decade of Ocean Science discussed This week NOC Executive Director, Ed Hill, attended a meeting of Group 1 nations (Western Europe, USA, Canada) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
