Minivan drives off cliff near Montara State Beach; rescue ongoing

A minivan drove off a cliff Friday morning by Montara State Beach, and a rescue operation is ongoing, officials said. "The vehicle is currently underwater," said Deputy Rosemerry Blankswade, a San Mateo County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. The Coast Guard and California Highway Patrol are assisting in the rescue. It's not clear how many people were in the minivan, Blankswade said. The incident reportedly took place around 8 a.m. Friday. Sophie Haigney is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
