| "A black, grainy foul-smelling substance" coated the floor of an operating room at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, according to a review by the District of Columbia health department last August, a year after an initial report detected sewage leaks in several operating rooms. The 2017 report was cited in a lawsuit filed against the hospital by the husband of a woman who died from a post-operative infection after surgery at the hospital. USA TODAY first reported on the hospital's problem with leaking sewage last fall.
