Scientists accurately model the action of aerosols on clouds

Global climate is a tremendously complex phenomenon, and researchers are making painstaking progress, year by year, to try to develop ever more accurate models. Now, an international group including researchers from the Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) in Japan, using the powerful K computer, have for the first time accurately calculated the effects of aerosols on clouds in a climate model.
Aerosols play a key role in cloud formation, as they provide the "seeds" -called cloud condensation nuclei- that allow clouds to form and affect their life cycle. The water in the air condenses onto the tiny particles, and gradually grow into droplets and finally into raindrops that precipitate. The action of aerosols is an important element of research on climate change, as they partially counteract the heating action of greenhouse gases.
It was previously believed that increasing aerosol density would always lead to more clouds, but recent satellite observations showed that this is not necessarily true. It is now understood that, due to temperature differences between the top and bottom layers of clouds, there is a delicate balance of evaporation and condensation, with aerosols in the lower parts of the clouds promoting cloud formation, but those in the upper parts allowing the water to evaporate.
Previously, climate models were unable to model the response of these micro-processes within the clouds to aerosol variation, but using the K computer, the RIKEN-led group combined a model that simulates the entire global weather over a year, at a horizontal resolution of just 14 kilometers, with a simulation of how the aerosols behave within clouds. Unlike conventional models, which show a uniform increase in clouds over the earth when there is an increase in aerosols, the high-resolution model, which takes into account the vertical processes inside clouds, accurately depicted how large areas experience a drop in cloud cover.
According to Yosuke Sato from the Computational Climate Science Research Team at RIKEN AICS and Nagoya University, "It was very gratifying to see that we could use a powerful supercomputer to accurately model the microphysics of clouds, giving a more accurate picture of how clouds and aerosol behave in the real world. In the future, we hope to use even more powerful computers to allow climate models to have more certainty in climate prediction."
The work, which was published in Nature Communications, was done by scientists from AICS in collaboration with researchers from Nagoya University, National Institute for Environmental Studies, Kyushu University, the University of Tokyo, and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency.

ESA and JAXA confirm further cooperation in space

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency JAXA and ESA reviewed and confirmed their continued cooperation at the International Space Exploration Forum ISEF2 on 3 March in Tokyo, Japan. The agencies released a joint statement detailing their partnership and future collaboration.

On March 3, 2018, on the occasion of the International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF2), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) held an Inter-Agency Meeting to discuss furthering their bilaterall cooperation. In the meeting JAXA and ESA announced a joint statement concerning the results of the studies of the Joint Working Groups established last May and future collaboration between the two agencies.

Selected as ISS Expedition crew member and assuming the post of Commander

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), a national research and development agency, is delighted to announce today that JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide was selected as a crew member of the International Space Station (ISS) Expedition 64/65. He will be the second Japanese to assume the post of commander on the ISS in leading the 65th Expedition.

Selected as a JAXA astronaut candidate in 1999, Astronaut Hoshide was launched as a mission specialist (MS) aboard the Space Shuttle in June 2008 for the second of three missions to deliver the Japanese Experiment Module ("Kibo") to the ISS. In July 2012, he also flew aboard the Soyuz spacecraft (31st launch of crew members to the ISS: 31S), working onboard for 124 days as flight engineer for the ISS Expedition 32/33 mission. The ISS Expedition 64/65 will be the third spaceflight for Astronaut Hoshide.

- Period of stay in space: Approximately six months starting around May of 2020

- Mission:
Expedition 64 (approx. four months): Activities as the ISS Flight Engineer, mainly consisting of maintenance of the ISS facilities (including "Kibo"), scientific experiments, and manipulation of the Mobile Servicing System (MSS)

Expedition 65 (approx. two months): In addition to the above activities, taking the lead as ISS Commander for a successful mission and ensured safety of the crew

- Project schedule: Training necessary for the long-duration stay on the ISS scheduled to begin around autumn 2019

On February 26, 2018, Hayabusa2 saw its destination -asteroid Ryugu- for the first time! The photographs were captured by the ONC-T (Optical Navigation Camera - Telescopic) onboard the spacecraft. Images were taken on February 26th.
The distance between Ryugu and Hayabusa2 when the images were taken is about 1.3 million km. Ryugu as seen from Hayabusa2 is in the direction of the constellation Pisces.

"Now that we see Ryugu, the Hayabusa2 project has shifted to the final preparation stage for arrival at the asteroid. There are no problems with the route towards Ryugu or the performance of the spacecraft, and we will be proceeding with maximum thrust," explains Project Manager, Yuichi Tsuda.

The ONC-T was developed under collaboration between JAXA, the University of Tokyo, Kochi University, Rikkyo University, Nagoya University, Chiba Institute of Technology, Meiji University, The University of Aizu, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).

JAXA Offers Opportunities to Naming the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter(MMO) and Send Messages to Mercury

Based on BepiColombo, the joint mission to explore Mercury between European Space Agency (ESA) and JAXA, JAXA is developing the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO).
The objective of the MMO is understanding the Mercury's environment and magnetosphere. The MMO, partnering the other orbiter built by ESA, is scheduled for launch from ESA's Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana by the fiscal year 2018*. To make the MMO more familiar, JAXA offers to the public opportunities to nickname it and send messages to carry aboard. Other than messages written by individuals, collection of messages contributed by a group, illustration, audio and video may be accepted. File must be less than one megabyte.

* Proposal due date is appropriate and subject to change.

Selected name will be informed on press release and the JAXA website sometime in April or May 2018.

BepiColombo and MMO
BepiColombo, an ESA-JAXA joint mission to explore Mercury, comprises of two orbiters - the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the MMO. MPO aims at elucidating the surface and internal composition of Mercury. The MMO mission is observing the planet's magnetic field and magnetosphere.
JAXA is presently working on the development of the MMO. Once injected into its target orbit, the Agency will also control its operation as observation of a magnetic field and magnetosphere is the domain that Japan is renowned for.
ESA controls BepiColombo launch and flight to Mercury and orbital insertions. The development and operation of the MPO, too, is part of the mission performed by ESA. Ariane 5 will launch the tandem satellites. After entering the planet's orbit, detached orbiters are slated for approximately year-long observation mission, which both agencies will cooperate to support.

Laser Link Communications Technology and Kibo Cooperative Research Agreement by JAXA, Sony CSL and Sony

National Research and Development Agency Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (hereafter known as JAXA, President: Naoki Okumura), Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc. (hereafter known as Sony CSL, President and Chief Executive Officer: Hiroaki Kitano) and Sony Corporation (hereafter known as Sony: President and Chief Executive Officer: Kazuo Hirai) made a cooperative research agreement with respect to conducting the on-orbit demonstrations of laser communications system. This research to be executed in the Kibo module on the International Space Station (ISS) aims at establishing a communications system of mass data between spacecraft and that which connects Earth and Space.

Since 2016, JAXA's Space Exploration Innovation Hub and Sony have cooperatively conducted fundamental studies of the laser communications, using the precision oriented optical disc technology.*1 Later in 2017, Sony CSL took over and has continued the fundamental research. Sony CSL and the Innovation Hub have established the laser communications technology and have developed the flight model of the optical communications module. Preparation is underway to demonstrate the motion of the laser link technology in Kibo and to verify orbital performance in late Japanese fiscal 2018. The demonstrations will be carried out at one of the ports located at the Kibo extravehicular platform. There, the optical communications module will be attached to the IVA-replaceable Small Exposed Experiment Platform (i-SEEP), a hardware adapter developed by JAXA.*2

*1 The studies are based on the agreement made in 2016: "Low-power Optical Modem for Long-distance communication", the projects selected as "Open Innovation Hub for Expanding Humanosphere and the Domain of Human Activity through Solar System Frontier Development". JAXA became one of the contractors to the Open Innovation Hub, the initiative by Japan Science and Technology Agency.

*2 The late Japanese fiscal 2018 orbital demonstrations are partially funded by a fee-based contract made between Human Spaceflight Technology Directorate, JAXA and Sony CSL. The contract results from the parties' effort initiated in late 2017 to facilitate Kibo. An experiment at the i-SEEP takes almost a year to prepare for, requiring less time.

Shiseido Conducts Joint Research on Stress in Closed-off Environment Simulating the International Space Station (ISS)

Shiseido Company, Limited ("Shiseido") and National Research and Development Agency Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) have conducted a joint research using a closed-off chamber environment training facility ("the isolation chamber") in JAXA's Tsukuba Space Center and observed a disruption in the circadian rhythm of salivary stress hormone (cortisol) and an increased distortion in facial expression during the stay in the isolation chamber.
The team has discovered the possibility of quick stress self-assessment by studying changes in saliva and facial expression.
Based on the results of this ongoing joint research, Shiseido will pursue the development of comprehensive beauty solutions to minimize the effects of stress on skin and body, while JAXA will leverage the results to establish a stress assessment method for astronauts aboard the ISS.

Research overview and results

JAXA has been considering the introduction of biomarkers for stress self-assessment so that astronauts can easily check their stress level by themselves when they are unable to receive regular professional face-to-face assessments on their mental and psychological health. As part of these initiatives, JAXA runs tests in the isolation chamber that precisely controls the experiment conditions and tracks the participants' behaviors in detail. (Picture 1)
Shiseido, in its turn, has long been engaged in research on the relationship between stress and skin/immune system, and has joined three JAXA's tests since January 2016, which resulted in the following findings:

1. The circadian rhythm of salivary cortisol was disrupted at the beginning of the stay and one day before the end of the stay in the isolation chamber.
2. The results of facial distortion test, which involved measuring the left‐right symmetry of facial expression, etc., showed an increase in the distortion level during the stay in the isolation chamber.

The results of this research suggest that the distortion in salivary cortisol level and facial expression may act as stress biomarkers and can be used not only in the space environment but also in a broader range of contexts. The results also revealed the possibility to easily apply facial distortion as a stress biomarker for various situations in daily life including daily stress assessment and remote assessment such as between space and the earth. These results were introduced at the 63rd Annual Meeting of Japan Society of Aerospace and Environmental Medicine.
On March 2, 2018, Shiseido's researcher Dr. Junichi Hosoi, who has long been involved in research on the relationship between stress and skin/immune system, will present the results of this research at I-ISEF (ISEF for Industries), a side event of the 2nd International Space Exploration Forum (ISEF).

Isolation test using the isolation chamber

In an isolation test, eight participants selected through open recruitment stay in the isolation chamber for two weeks with baseline data collected before entering and after exiting the chamber. As of February 20, 2018, five isolation tests have been completed, three of which Shiseido took part in.

Details of joint research results

1. Salivary cortisol
It is known that optimally performing cortisol follows a pattern called the "cortisol curve" and in a healthy curve, cortisol is high in the morning and tapers off through the day and evening. During this test, the salivary cortisol level was measured four times a day (in the morning, at noon, in the afternoon and at night). The results of the past three tests showed a distortion in the circadian rhythm of cortisol (increase in cortisol level at noon and in the afternoon) at the beginning of the stay and one day before the end of the stay in the isolation chamber, meaning that the stress level increased. The levels went back to normal after leaving the isolation chamber. (Chart 1)

2. Facial distortion
Shiseido measured facial distortion level based on the symmetry in facial expression. The results showed that facial distortion was developed during the stay in isolation. (Chart 2)

Shiseido will leverage the test results into further development of apps, such as adding a stress measuring function on "Smile App*".

NASA-JAXA Joint Statement on Space Exploration


On January 24, 2018, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) met to exchange their views on space exploration. The agencies signed a joint statement affirming their strong mutual interest in continued future cooperation in space exploration.
Both agencies have established a strong and committed partnership throughout the many years of cooperation in all mission areas, including human exploration, Earth and space science, fundamental aeronautics, and especially through the International Space Station (ISS) Program.
Both agencies affirmed to expand this partnership in the field of space exploration, upon sharing their long-term vision for expanding human presence deeper into the solar system, by starting with extending human presence to an orbiting platform around the moon, that can benefit from contributions and technological expertise from both agencies, acting as an important piece of infrastructure for human access to the lunar surface and eventually to Mars.
Both agencies welcome on coordinating with their governments to enable an innovative and sustainable exploration program.

Consistent with the Japan-U.S. Summit Meeting of November 2017, whereby Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan and President Donald J. Trump of the United States of America noted the long history of bilateral space cooperation between Japan and the United States and affirmed their commitment to continuing cooperation in space exploration between their two nations;

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (hereinafter referred to as NASA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (hereinafter referred to as JAXA),

Recognizing their strong and committed partnership in all mission areas, including human and robotic exploration, Earth and space science, and fundamental aeronautics research, and in particular their many years of experience in the International Space Station (ISS) Program;

Recognizing their shared objective to leverage the strong foundation of the ISS to advance cooperative, innovative and sustainable space exploration beyond low-Earth orbit, and their intention to continue to utilize the ISS to enable exploration through research and technology development, including development of international standards for exploration;

Recognizing their shared enthusiasm and long-term exploration vision for expanding human presence deeper into the solar system, starting with extending human presence into the lunar vicinity as a proving ground for future missions to Mars;

Recognizing that their agencies, together with the other ISS Partners, are studying the concept and confirmed technical feasibility of a deep space gateway that orbits the moon;

Recognizing the deep space gateway concept can benefit from contributions and technological expertise from both agencies;

Recognizing the deep space gateway concept, supported by NASA's Space Launch System and Orion spacecraft, enables human presence in cis-lunar space, acting as an important piece of infrastructure for human access to the lunar surface, and eventually Mars, as well as, supporting robotic missions to the lunar surface;

Expecting that the continued partnership between both agencies will yield concrete results in maturing a flexible and sustainable deep space infrastructure to support a steady cadence of increasingly complex human and robotic missions in the boundless frontier of space that will include participation from other international partners and industrial partners;

Welcome coordinating with their governments to seek endorsement of plans for an innovative and sustainable exploration program and their potential respective contributions to such a program.

The University of Nairobi Hands the First KiboCUBE CubeSat over to JAXA Under UNOOSA-JAXA KiboCUBE Programme


On January 16, 2018, at the JAXA Tsukuba Space Center, the team from the University of Nairobi handed over to JAXA their first KiboCUBE CubeSat, 1KUNS-PF (1st Kenyan University Nano Satellite-Precursor Flight) which was developed by the team. Under the KiboCUBE programme between the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and JAXA, 1KUNS-PF is the first CubeSat selected to be deployed from Kibo, the Japanese Experiment Module of the International Space Station (ISS). Preparation is underway to reach the deployment timeline, sometime this spring.

Through KiboCUBE, the capacity-building initiative that UNOOSA and JAXA launched in September 2015, both organizations cooperate to offer opportunities to deploy CubeSats from the Kibo module. This dedicated collaboration is designed to improve space technology of the developing countries of the United Nations member states. In August 2016, 1KUNS-PF was selected jointly by UNOOSA and JAXA for the first round of KiboCUBE programme, and is the first satellite to be developed and operated by Kenya.

Launch Result, Epsilon-3 with ASNARO-2 aboard

At6:06:11a.m. (Japan Standard Time) January 18, 2017, JAXA launched Epsilon-3, the third Epsilon launch vehicle which encapsulates NEC Small radar satellite "ASNARO-2", from the JAXA Uchinoura Space Center. The launch occurred on time.

The launch and flight of Epsilon-3 took place normally. Approximately 52 minutes 35 seconds into the flight, the separation of ASNARO-2 proceeded, with confirmation as successful.

JAXA expresses appreciation for the support by all.

Epsilon-3 Launch Postponement with ASNARO-2 aboard

In light of adverse weather predicted for the launch day, JAXA postponed the launch of Epsilon-3, the third Epsilon launch vehicle which encapsulates NEC Small radar satellite "ASNARO-2"*, from the JAXA Uchinoura Space Center, to no earlier than January 18, 2018.
The Epsilon-3 launch was previously scheduled for January 17, 2018.

The new launch day will be informed once determined.

*ASNARO-2 was developed by NEC Corporation as part of the project funded by Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. JAXA, NEC Corporation's contractor is in charge of the ASNARO-2 launch operations.

Completion of Critical Operations Phase, SHIKISAI and TSUBAME

JAXA received telemetry data from SHIKISAI and TSUBAME, confirming that their satellite attitude control system had transitioned to the steady state. Current status of both satellites is stable.
Subsequently, the following procedure occurred - power generation that supports the satellites' operation by the deployed solar array wings, ground communications and sound attitude control that maintains those operations. Combined by the completion of the series of other operations, such as powering up of the bus and mission equipment, the satellites have entered the state where they can be sustained in orbit. This concludes their critical operations phase*.

SHIKISAI and TSUBAME will move on to the next operations phase**, where the functions of the satellites' onboard apparatus will be examined approximately in the next three-month period.

JAXA conveys deep appreciation for the support by all for the satellites' launch and tracking.

* Critical operations phase: the phase that follows satellite's separation from a launch vehicle, solar array deployment, and powering up of instruments for the satellite's regular operations. The critical operations phase comes to an end at the start of the satellite's control mode for nominal operation.

** Next operations phase: during this phase, the entire satellite, its observation/mission sensors and other onboard equipment are scrutinized.

Approximately at 12:54 p.m. (Japan Standard Time, JST), the JAXA Santiago Ground Station, Chile received the signals from TSUBAME (SLATS; Super Low Altitude Satellite), launched from the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center earlier at 10:26:22 a.m. (JST), December 23, 2017. The signal reception confirms that the satellite's solar array deployment and attitude control based on the onboard sun sensors have occurred as scheduled.

Current Status of SHIKISAI/GCOM-C, Global Change Observation Mission - Climate

At 10:26:22 a.m. (Japan Standard Time, JST), December 23, 2017, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched H-IIA F37 encapsulating SHIKISAI (GCOM-C, Global Change Observation Mission - Climate).
The reception of telemetry data at the JAXA Mingenew Station, Australia was made at 10:44 a.m. (JST), confirming SHIKISAI's solar array deployment above Australia. After that, at 11:18 a.m. (JST), the satellite's attitude control based on its earth sensors was confirmed by telemetry transmitted to the JAXA Santiago Station.
Images of SHIKISAI's extended solar array wings will be available on the special website designated for JAXA's earth observation satellites.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and JAXA successfully launched H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 37 (H-IIA F37) (with upgraded function) which encapsulates the Global Changing Observation Mission - Climate "SHIKISAI" (GCOM-C) and the Super Low Altitude Test Satellite "TSUBAME" (SLATS) at 10:26:22, 2017 (JST) from the JAXA Tanegashima Space Center.

The launch and flight of H-IIA F37 proceeded as planned. So did the separation of SHIKISAI and TSUBAME, which was confirmed respectively at approximately 16 minutes and 13 seconds and 1 hour and 47 minutes 59 seconds after liftoff.
