29-11-2017 05:13 PM CET Following the tradition to celebrate the International Day for the elimination of Violence against Women, the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality proposes this year to bring together European and National Parliamentarians around the theme: "The Istanbul Convention: combating violence against women at national and EU level". The aim of the inter-parliamentary Committee meeting (ICM) is to assess what is the state of the ratification and implementation of the Istanbul Convention at EU and national levels and how it is being monitored by GREVIO. The event is taking place in a year that the EU is especially devoting to prevent and combat violence against women. The signature by the EU of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (the Istanbul Convention) has been the major milestone of 2017 in the common task of fighting gender-based violence. One of the main challenges in the application of this instrument is to ensure that the protection of victims is not hampered by the diversity of national measures. The draft implementation report whose co-rapporteurs are Ms Jiménez Becerril (EPP, Spain) on behalf of FEMM, and Ms Soraya Post (S&D, Sweden) on behalf of LIBE, was presented in a joint meeting with LIBE committee and includes a general assessment of the implementation of the directive and recommendations to improve it, including proposals for a coherent EU legal framework protecting victims.
