Although more than 160 countries have signed the UN Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict, thousands of children are still being recruited as soldiers in conflicts. The 2017 UN report on Children and Armed Conflict names 56 armed groups and seven state armies as guilty of recruiting children. 12 February is the International Day against the use of child soldiers, or 'Red Hand Day'.

On this occasion, Linda McAvan, Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Development said: 'Children must be protected from violence. While the EU and others are already actively tackling the problem, it is imperative that we step up international efforts to protect children from being recruited and abused by armed groups. We also need to continue helping those that have become victims.'
