Statement of the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, following the plenary vote on the Spitzenkandidaten process 07-02-2018 12:48 AM CET The European Parliament today approved with an overwhelming majority the revision of the Framework Agreement on relations between the European Parliament and the European Commission. The revision codifies the so called Spitzenkandidaten process as deployed in 2014 with the nomination of President Juncker. This process foresees that all political groups indicate their own candidate for Commission President following a selection within the political parties. The candidate of the political group electing the biggest number of Members of the European Parliament would be the President of the European Commission. I should like to thank them in particular for giving me the opportunity to pay a humble tribute to two heroes: Alberto Jiménez Becerril and Ascensión García.  Day after day, they worked quietly to defend the idea of a democratic, open Spain founded on solidarity. In the resolution we adopted yesterday, Parliament noted the fact that sufficient progress has been made for the negotiations to move on to the second phase.
