| | The Senate voted Monday to begin debate on immigration legislation intended to provide a path to citizenship to so-called DREAMers, undocumented immigrants brought to the country as children. Protected status for most of them will start expiring in early March. In exchange, Republicans are demanding increased border security, reductions in family based immigration and the end of the diversity visa lottery. As the open-ended debate began, GOP Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell told senators they should focus on passing something that is likely to be approved by the House and signed by President Trump. But McConnell promised not to favor a particular proposal.
