EU citizenship; future of the Schengen area: hearings

The Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs will hold a hearing with experts on EU citizenship and its relation with fundamental rights, including the rights of minorities, on 19.02.18. The Committee will then hold a hearing on the situation in the Schengen Area on 20.02.18. The aim is hold a high-level political debate regarding the initiatives undertaken by the EU since the start of the migration crisis and to further assess the progress made, with a look towards the future.




Work-life balance: public hearing

The Committee on Employment and Social Affairs will hold a hearing with experts aiming to provide input for the Committee's upcoming legislative report on work-life balance for parents and carers. The hearing, which will take place on 21.02.18, will look into legal implications and the effects of new rights for workers and employers.




European Citizens' Initiative: public hearing on revision of regulation

The Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Committee on Petitions will hold a public hearing on the European Citizens' Initiative and the Commission's legislative proposal for the revision of the its Regulation. The hearing will take place on 21.02.18 with the participation of stakeholders and experts, including NGOs, academics, Commission representatives, the European Ombudsman, and representatives from the citizen committees of the previous ECIs on 'Right2Water' and 'Minority Safepack'.




Revision of the Gas Directive: public hearing

The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy will hold a public hearing on the revision of the gas directive on 21.02.18. It will focus on the proposed extension of the Directive's provision to gas pipelines to and from third countries, and on the possible impact on the EU's internal gas market and the security of gas supply. The hearing is being organised in light of the Committee's on-going work on the recent proposal to amend current rules on the internal market in natural gas.

The Committee on Budgetary Control will go over the draft reports concerning the budget implementation of Other Institutions, the Agencies, the Joint Undertakings, and the European Commission for 2016, during its meetings of 19-20.02.18. It will also hold a hearing with Belgian candidate for membership of the European Court of Auditors, Annemie Turtelboom, on 20.02.18. The hearing will be followed by a vote behind closed doors on the candidate's nomination.




Environment: committee debate on petitions

The Petitions Committee will look into a series of petitions on environmental matters from across the EU. Matters under consideration include the alleged non-implementation of the Water Framework Directive, human exposure to pesticides, and the possible negative environmental and public health effects of high-voltage power lines. The meeting will take place on 21.02.18.
