Deep sea mining regulations discussed

Royal Society

NOC's Dr Daniel Jones presented at a meeting at the Royal Society in London on deep-sea mining on 12 February. The meeting focused on the draft regulations for the exploitation of mineral resources in the Area. The meeting was designed to engage with government ministers, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the International Seabed Authority along with a range of other policymakers to discuss the latest advances in scientific, legal and economic thinking on deep-sea mining. This presentation was part of the engagement activities the NOC has been carrying out as part of the Commonwealth Marine Economies Programme.

Marine science to support UN2030 SDGs

Sustainable Development Goal 14

The European Marine Board (EMB), of which the NOC is a member, has released the 6th Forum Message highlighting the need for marine science to be at the core of the ocean governance debate, and also presenting eight specific commitments that the EMB is making to underpin those needs and support future development. Read the full story here.

The main message from the Forum is that the role of marine science should be to provide a solid evidence base to enable science-based societal debate on the future direction of ocean governance. Speakers, panellists and attendees alike also highlighted the importance of integration, moving towards greater collaboration to address the upcoming challenges. They also added to the growing voice calling for greater engagement of marine science with society, and improved ocean literacy.
