NOC News Round Up - 13 April 2018

Deep-sea fishing has been massively under-reported

The first assessment of global deep-sea trawling using new estimates of catch data has revealed that 42% more fish have been caught over the last 60 years than was reported to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations.

"Our study shows that there is systematic under-reporting of the real catch, which has led to the removal of nearly 25 million tonnes of fish from the deep-sea in total. These estimates need to be taken into account when making decisions about fisheries management." said lead author Lissette Victorero, from the NOC.

NOC hosts Commonwealth marine science event

Our Commonwealth Ocean

On Monday, the NOC in Southampton hosted a celebration of marine science across the Commonwealth on behalf of Environment Minister Thérèse Coffey. The event was attended by High Commissioners from across the Commonwealth, ahead of next week's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, where member states will gather in London to agree further global measures to protect our oceans.

At the event, the Minister announced that the UK has joined a global battle to safeguard the world's coral reefs from climate change and rising sea temperatures, and toured an exhibition of marine science.

The event culminated with a live video link to the RRS James Cook off the coast of Namibia where the Minister and MP for Eastleigh, Mims Davis, chatted to the current expedition science team members Brian King, and Nina Faure Beaulieu, and the ships Master John Leask. The audience were then shown a short 'behind the scenes' video Nina had put together on sampling at sea, which you can see on our You Tube channel and read more about the event on our website.
