Employment and labour market

Families and the labour market, England: 2017

The employment rate of mothers in England has increased by 11.8 percentage points to 73.7% between 1996 and 2017; however, mothers aged between 16 and 49 are still less likely to be in employment than women without dependent children of the same age.

1.1 million (75.2%) inactive or unemployed mothers stated they would definitely or probably return to work in the future.

Mothers with a youngest dependent child aged three or four years old have the lowest employment rate of all adults with or without dependent children (65.1%).

More mothers with young children working full-time

Mums with toddlers are more likely to undertake full-time work now than 20 years ago. But generally, women with young children still tend to take part-time work over full-time work.

While more dads with young children work part-time now than in 1997, their rate of employment is not as affected by having children.

Flexible working, parental leave, and the provision of free childcare have all had an impact on parental employment rates - see how that's changed since 1996 in our latest article

Personal well-being in the UK: April 2016 to March 2017

We continue to see small year-on-year improvements in average life satisfaction ratings.

There has been a slight increase in average happiness ratings over this period. This comes after ratings leveled off between the years ending March 2015 and 2016. Earlier years saw regular increases.

For both anxiety and feelings that the things we do in life are worthwhile, ratings continue to remain level. These measures last saw small improvements between the years ending March 2014 and 2015.
