  The King assassination and other turmoil of 1968 further destabilized the old Detroit order already shaken by the 1967 race riots. While universities and corporations began offering more opportunities to African Americans, the white working class in Detroit factories and union halls reacted by moving to the right politically, eventually becoming the "Reagan Democrats." This was a year that signaled a lasting shift in the American electorate. In a yearlong series of stories and videos, the USA TODAY NETWORK will peel back the layers of a complex and textured year to reveal how, for good or ill, 1968 informs who we are.
