Debate with European Commissioner Oettinger at the EP in Brussels
On 3 May, Commissioner Günther Oettinger presented to the BUDG committee the Commission's proposal for the EU's next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), as adopted by the Collège the previous day. The document sets out not only how the Commission conceives the general framework for the next generation of EU programmes, including headline figures for each of the budget's main areas, but also how, in its view, the EU budget should be paid for after 2020 ('EU Own Resources').

From 29 May, the Commission is expected to adopt gradually a series of legislative proposals for all EU programmes and funds post-2020.

On 14 March, plenary adopted two resolutions on "Preparing the Parliament's position on the MFF post-2020" and "Reform of the EU system of Own-Resources", which present Parliament's views on the next MFF and put forward recommendations on the budget's revenue side. Plenary is expected to respond to the Commission's proposal by adopting a new resolution at the end of May.

On Tuesday 24 April 2018, the Committee on Budget (BUDG) and the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) of the European Parliament organised a public hearing entitled 'The EU budget and the Paris Climate Agreement'. The objective of the hearing was to assess the compatibility of the current and future EU budgets with the Paris climate agreement.

Also, the hearing aimed to identify the distribution of climate action spending, to assess the extent to which the commitment of 20% has been met, and to discuss future challenges.
