Welcome to the latest edition of the monthly PHE Statistics bulletin.

PHE Statistics is a summary of the latest official statistics releases published by PHE, arranged by topic. The bulletin will also feature any recent ad hoc statistical publications.

Bulletins will routinely be published on the first Tuesday of each month or as soon as possible afterwards.

Cancer

Cancer registration statistics, England: first release, 2016

This first release of  2016 cancer registration data has been produced jointly by ONS and PHE. It presents cancer diagnoses and age-standardised incidence rates for all types of cancer by age and sex. 

Cardiovascular disease (CVD)

Cardiovascular disease profiles: February 2018 update

Includes an update of the admissions, mortality, treatment care and services provision data for heart disease, stroke, kidney and diabetes in the online tool. The narrative reports for heart disease, stroke, kidney and diabetes have also been updated.

Child health

Breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks after birth: 2017 to 2018 quarterly data

Number and proportion of infants who have been fully, partially or not at all breastfed at 6 to 8 weeks after birth. This update includes data for both quarter 1 (April 2017 to June 2017) and quarter 2 (July 2017 to September 2017).

End of life care

End of Life Care Profiles: February 2018 update

This release includes an update of these indicators by Local Authority:

  • place of death indicators (hospital, home, care home, hospice and other places by age)
  • underlying cause of death indicators (cancer, respiratory disease and circulatory disease by age)

Lifestyle and behaviours 

Local Tobacco Control Profiles for England: February 2018 update 

See the latest local tobacco control profiles commentary slides for a summary of what's new in this update. 

This update shows:

  • there were 1,685 smoking attributable hospital admissions per 100,000 population (age 35 years and over) and the associated cost per capita of these was £28.40 in England.
  • there has been an increase in emergency hospital admissions for COPD in England to 417 per 100,000 population (age 35 and over)
  • premature births (less than 37 weeks gestation) have increased to 79.5 per 1,000 live births in the period 2014-16
  • smoking prevalence continues to decrease as shown in the GP Patient Survey (15.6% for 2016/17) and Quality and Outcomes Framework (17.6% in 2016/17).

Local Alcohol Profiles for England (LAPE): February 2018 update

See the latest LAPE commentary slides for a summary of what's new in this update. 

This update shows:

  • the rate of hospital admissions where the main reason for admission was attributed to alcohol (narrow measure) decreased by 1.6% in 2016/17
  • the rate of admissions where the primary or a secondary reason for admission was linked to alcohol (broad measure) increased by 0.2% in 2016/17, continuing the upward trend   
  • the downward trend in alcohol-specific admissions in under 18s continued with a 8.5% fall in the latest period.

Substance misuse treatment in secure settings: statistics 2016 to 2017

Alcohol and drug misuse treatment data in prisons and other secure settings from PHE's national drug treatment monitoring system (NDTMS). This report and accompanying tables present statistical analysis of treatment data from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017. 

Immunisation

Cumulative monthly flu vaccination uptake data for the 2017 to 2018 winter season:

The most recent  monthly data release shows cumulative flu vaccinations administered from 1 September to 31 December 2017.
