Highlights - International activities on animal welfare and competitiveness of EU farmers - Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development

A representative of DG SANTE presented to AGRI Members its recent report on the impact of international animal welfare activities on the competitiveness of European livestock producers (21.03.2018). The issue is a crucial one for EU farmers, since it is important to disseminate the EU's animal welfare rules internationally, notably among close trading partners, in order to ensure a level playing field on the market.

Agricultural part of the Omnibus package
In January 2018 the agricultural part of the "Omnibus" regulation entered into force with the aim of further simplifying the CAP to the benefit of both farmers and national authorities. It includes changes applicable to all four of the basic policy regulations. In that context, the Commission presented a set of upcoming or recently adopted delegated acts following on from the new CAP basic acts (21.03.2018).

Brazilian food safety system
A Commission representative from DG SANTE presented Members with information on the current situation of the Brazilian food safety system (21.03.2018). This presentation took place in the context of the forthcoming visit of an AGRI delegation to Brazil on 2-6 April. In addition to issues related to public health, Members are concerned with ensuring a level playing field between EU and Brazilian operators as regards food safety.
